Juan, hijo de Zebedeo y de Salomé, hermano de Santiago, fue capaz de plasmar con exquisitas imágenes literarias los sublimes pensamientos de Dios. Hombre de elevación espiritual, se lo considera el águila que se alza hacia las vertiginosas alturas del misterio trinitario: “En el principio existía el Verbo, y el Verbo estaba en Dios, y el Verbo era Dios”.
Es de los íntimos de Jesús y le está cerca en las horas más solemnes de su vida. Está junto a él en la última Cena, durante el proceso y, único entre los apóstoles, asiste a su muerte al lado de la Virgen. Pero contrariamente a cuanto pueden hacer pensar las representaciones del arte, Juan no era un hombre fantasioso y delicado, y bastaría el apodo que puso el Maestro a él y a su hermano Santiago -”hijos del trueno”- para demostrarnos un temperamento vivaz e impulsivo, ajeno a compromisos y dudas, hasta parecer intolerante.
En el Evangelio él se presenta a sí mismo como “el discípulo a quien Jesús amaba”. Aunque no podemos indagar sobre el secreto de esta inefable amistad, podemos adivinar una cierta analogía entre el alma del “hijo del trueno” y la del “Hijo del hombre”, que vino a la tierra a traer no sólo la paz sino también el fuego. Después de la resurrección, Juan parmanecerá largo tiempo junto a Pedro. Pablo, en la carta a los Gálatas, habla de Pedro, Santiago y Juan “como las columnas” de la Iglesia.
En el Apocalipsis Juan dice que fue perseguido y relegado a la isla de Patmos por la “palabra de Dios y el testimonio de Jesucristo.” Según una tradición, Juan vivió en Éfeso en compañía de la Virgen, y bajo Domiciano fue echado en una caldera de aceite hirviendo, de la que salió ileso, pero con la gloria de haber dado también él su “testimonio”. Después del destierro en Patmos, regresó definitivamente a Éfeso en donde exhortaba infatigablemente a los fieles al amor fraterno, como resulta de las tres epístolas contenidas en el Nuevo Testamento. Murió de avanzada edad en Éfeso, durante el imperio de Trajano, hacia el año 98.
